2018 European Grand Prix preview

It's the third time the F1 circus will go to Baku so this is one of the new tracks. It's also a street circuit which is very nice!

Here's a highlight video from the first year:

And here is Nico Rosberg's pole lap from the first year:

The first race in Baku made us all wait for something really awesome but the race was actually very boring.

The race start was very clean and no drama what so ever. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg had a great start and lead the race from the beginning till the end. It was a grand slam for him so maybe this is a track for Mercedes also this year.

Last year the race was one of the most exiting all year. Take a look at this video:

Now let's see my predictions:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:
  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
  2. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes
  3. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari
Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

Surprise: McLaren will have a great race here.

Remember to post your own predictions to our F1-4-LIFE PREDICTORS LEAGUE.

The rules:

POINTS: 1st - 3
2nd - 5
3rd - 10

HOW IT WORKS: the aim of the game is simply predict who comes where in the race (top3). A total of 18 points can be won on a race day. If you get winner and and 3rd place right but 2nd wrong you get 13 points same if you get 1 correct. eg. 2nd you get 5 points. If a driver wins the race and you said he would come 2nd or 3rd no points would be awarded. Same if he came in another position, and you predicted that wrong. A table will be posted up every race weekend. The point scoring system will change once the cars become more competitive. Everyone will say a merc 1,2 so it won't be close or fun.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PREDICTIONS: send an email to f14lifeblog@gmail.com or message the Facebook page to submit your predictions. You have until lights out to make them. If you submit them when the race has started they won't count. So be quick! like the Mercedes.

THE PRIZE: the winner of the league will win themselves a admin place on the F1 4 LIFE page along side AE, JT, MH, MW, JI and PM. If you don't want to be an admin you are welcome to participate anyway. We may also come up with some other prize if it helps.

THIS TIME YOU ALSO GET BONUS POINTS! PREDICT POLE POSITION AND FASTEST LAP CORRECTLY TO EARN 5 EXTRA POINTS!

That's it for today and if you want to send me feedback then email me: f14lifeblog@gmail.com

2018 Chinese Grand Prix review

When the race started we saw Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel having a bad get away from pole so he blocked his teammate Kimi Raikkonen completely! (just like in Bahrain) Again Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas was there to attack and took 2nd place from Raikkonen.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen also had a great start and overtook Raikkonen. He even let the team know how happy he was and they told him to keep calm.

The world champion Lewis Hamilton had a pretty bad start again. He basically got stuck in traffic and couldn't really get ahead. When is he going to start winning races this season?? This feels so weird!

On the 21st lap Bottas got in front of Vettel due to his under cut pit stop strategy. Only Raikkonen was in front so Ferrari ruined his race again to help Vettel. They just didn't pit him when he was supposed to so he lost a lot of time but it helped Vettel.

Bottas overtook Raikkonen easily with no problems what so ever. Raikkonen let Vettel pass him so no time lost there. Now finally Raikkonen got the green light to pit and because of the sacrifice he dropped to 6th.

At this point it seemed that Bottas was going to win the race but then the two Toro Rossos collided and the safety car was deployed. Now Red Bull got a huge advantage when they pitted for fresh tyres. Both Ricciardo and Verstappen were just flying after this! They clocked fastest laps lap after lap.

Verstappen almost collided with Hamilton and went off track. Ricciardo was able to pass him and started to chase the top3 drivers with Verstappen close behind him. They start by overtaking Hamilton easily. Hamilton even said on the radio that they should have stopped also once more.

Then Ricciardo overtook Vettel with DRS and it was so much easier with the newer tyres. Verstappen on the other hand crashed into the side of Vettel and ruined both of their chances to fight for a podium finish. Vettel was really frustrated obviously. Hamilton drove pass them but Raikkonen chose the other side around and overtook Hamilton as well for 3rd place!

The final thing Ricciardo had to do was to overtake the race leader Valtteri Bottas and eventually he did. Even though Bottas tried to block him he still found a gap and went for it. After the overtake Bottas had nothing on Ricciardo and the race was basically over.

I enjoyed this race more than the previous two this season so more races like this please!

And then as usual it's time for the predictions and the results:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. Vettel took pole.

The race:

  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. He was 4th after a lot of bad luck and Ricciardo won.
  2. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes - CORRECT
  3. Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari - CORRECT
Fastest lap: Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari - WRONG. Would have been but Ricciardo got newer tyres and was faster.

Surprise: Esteban Ocon, Force India - He was surprisingly bad in my opinion

2018 Chinese Grand Prix preview

This is already the 15th time we come to China for a Formula One Grand Prix.

The first event back in 2004 ended with Rubens Barrichello taking the checkered flag as the race winner followed by Jenson Button and Kimi Räikkönen. Michael Schumacher had spun off the track in qualifying and didn't set a time. He started from the pit lane and was 12th in the race.

Then in 2005 Renault was the best car so the podium had the two Renaults in front (Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella) and Kimi Räikkönen was best of the rest in third.

The next year in 2006 the same thing - Renault was the best car but what is this? The Renaults were 2nd and 3rd and the winner was Michael Schumacher! Well.. the 2nd best car was Ferrari so it wasn't that strange after all. Let's see if Ferrari can pull off one of those this weekend. I mean they did in the first race in Melbourne so why not repeat it? Make Mercedes a little nervous.

My favorite race in China was probably in 2007. McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton had been the favorites for the championship and in this race something else happened. Their luck changed and the black horse (also known as the Iceman) started breathing down their necks. Hamilton made a mistake and then...

Kimi won the race! He really needed that victory. Alonso was 2nd in his McLaren, Felipe Massa was third in his Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel was 4th in his Toro Rosso which was his best result at that point and here's his reaction...

In 2008 Hamilton didn't make a mistake and won the race followed by the two Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen.

The year after that it was all about Brawn GP and also Red Bull started showing some improvement as well. In this race Sebastian Vettel took the first win ever for Red Bull and Mark Webber was 2nd which made it a perfect day for them. Jenson Button was 3rd after winning the two previous races.

In 2010 Red Bull were very hungry after they barely lost to Brawn in 2009. They wanted to win more than ever but the man who had switched teams from Brawn to McLaren (Jenson Button) won the race! His teammate Lewis Hamilton was 2nd and Nico Rosberg was 3rd.

Then in 2011 it was the other McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, who won the race. This time the Red Bulls were right behind in 2nd and 3rd.

In 2012 Lewis Hamilton's former teammate Nico Rosberg took his maiden victory followed by Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton was on the podium in 2013 as well but in 3rd. Just Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen were in front of him.

In 2014 the Mercs Lewis and Nico took 1st and 2nd. Fernando Alonso was 3rd which was a miracle if you ask me. The Ferrari F14-T was just awful.

In 2015 it was the mercs again in the same order. But this time it was Sebastian Vettel 3rd with Ferrari and not Fernando Alonso. Kimi Räikkönen was 4th. This year Ferrari is even stronger and it will make things more interesting.

In 2016 Nico Rosberg won with Mercedes, Sebastian Vettel was 2nd and Daniil Kvyat was 3rd. This was the race were Vettel said that Kvyat "came like a torpedo from the inside" and didn't like his driving style. After a while he switched seats with Max Verstappen.

Last year Lewis Hamilton won before Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. This year Verstappen hasn't had a very good start but maybe he will do better this weekend.

It seems that the most successful drivers at Shanghai are Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton's teammate, Valtteri Bottas, is also one to keep an eye on. He is hungry and was very disappointed after his 2nd place in Bahrain. He wants more!

And then as usual it's time for the predictions.

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:

  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
  2. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes
  3. Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari
Fastest lap: Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari

Surprise: Esteban Ocon, Force India

2018 Bahrain Grand Prix review

At the start it was clear that Kimi Raikkonen lost his position to Valtteri Bottas because Sebastian Vettel blocked his teammate. In the end of the day I don't think it matters if we look at how the Iceman's race finished.

Max Verstappen going wheel to wheel with Lewis Hamilton was a bit risky and the dutchman found it out himself when he got a puncture. Another bad race for him! On the same lap Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull failed him once more. Both of these Red Bull drivers could do so much better if they were driving a Ferrari or Mercedes. Actually this time the puncture was mostly Verstappen's own fault but you know what I'm talking about.

On lap 5 Hamilton jumps from 9th to 6th when he overtakes Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon and Nico Hulkenberg at the same time!! I mean WHAAAT?!? You don't see that every day. I actually just remembered that Hamilton did this in 2006 in GP2 also and it was absolutely amazing! What a driver!! (I'm not a Hamilton fan),

What the hell happened on lap 36 with Raikkonen's pitstop?!? He got the green light when the front wheel wasn't on properly. There was also a mechanic in the way who he run over with his rear wheel! Terrible accident! The mechanic broke his leg and Ferrari got a penalty for an unsafe release. Raikkonen also had to retire from the race. Ferrari should get their heads out of their asses.

Hamilton did a great job moving up to 3rd but the best thing was Bottas trying to hunt down Vettel in the last laps. I really wanted Bottas to win but maybe Vettel deserved the win more so congratz to him.

Bonus: Gerhard Berger waved the checkered flag :D I liked him when he was still driving in F1. Great personality.

Then it's time for my predictions and the results:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. Vettel took pole and Hamilton had a penalty.

The race:

  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. He was 3rd and Vettel won the race.
  2. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes - CORRECT
  3. Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari - WRONG. He retired from the race.
Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. His teammate Bottas was fastest.

Surprise: Romain Grosjean will have a great race - Not even close. He had difficulties but maybe next year he will succeed.

POINTS: 1st - 3

2nd - 5
3rd - 10

+ possible bonus points

2018 Bahrain Grand Prix preview

The season just started and it's already time for the second Grand Prix! Will Mercedes and Ferrari continue with their dominance or is Red Bull going to surprise us all and win? I hope to see more surprises this season.

This is going to be the 14th Grand Prix at Sakhir if I remember correctly. It would have been the 15th but the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled because of the Bahraini protests if you still remember?

One of the most interesting thing though is that in 2014 Bahrain switched from daylight to a night race! They will continue like this in 2018 as well.

So what has happened in the past 14 years at this circuit?

In 2004 the first race was a bit boring if I remember correctly. Ferrari was still dominating the series so they had a 1-2 and Button was about half a minute behind them.

In 2005 it was a bit different because now it was the year of Renault. Fernando Alonso won, Jarno Trulli was second in his Toyota and Kimi Räikkönen was third in his McLaren. Alonso and Räikkönen ended up being the two superstars in 2005.

In 2006 all I can remember is that Räikkönen started from the back and was still third in the end. A very impressive performance. In front of him was the two drivers who fought for the championship that year, Michael Schumacher in second and Fernando Alonso in first place.

In 2007 Felipe Massa won the race, Lewis Hamilton was second and Kimi Räikkönen was third again.

In 2008 Massa won again, Räikkönen was second this time and Robert Kubica third. It seems that Massa and Räikkönen have also been very successful at Sakhir.

In 2009 Jenson Button took the only victory for a British driver (until Hamilton won in 2014 and 2015) in Bahrain. Brawn was the team and it was their dominance back then and not Mercedes.. later Brawn became Mercedes.

In 2010 Bahrain was the first race of the season and it was also Alonso's first race at Ferrari. He did the same thing as Räikkönen had done in 2007 by winning the first race at Ferrari.

In 2013 Sebastian Vettel won and the Lotuses of Räikkönen and Grosjean followed him. The same podium result was also in 2012 so these guys really seem to like this track.

In 2014 it was all about Lewis Hamilton's and Nico Rosberg's one on one fight at the top. That made the race one of the most interesting in 2014. I hope we will see something similar this weekend but the Ferraris should join the battle if they have the pace!

In 2015-2016 the Mercs dominated the race again like they did in 2014. No surprise there but in 2016 Kimi Räikkönen got in between the two Mercs which was a nice surprise. In 2017 Sebastian Vettel got in front of the Mercs and won the race. Will it happen again this year? Vettel is usually pretty good here.

Then it's time for my predictions:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:

  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
  2. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes
  3. Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari
Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

Surprise: Romain Grosjean will have a great race.
