Comparing the 2014 teammates: Williams

In the last "comparing the teammates"-post I promised to compare the Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas.

Valtteri Bottas has been with the team for a few years already. First he was the testdriver and last year he got to be Pastor Maldonado's teammate who was driving for Williams at the time.

Felipe Massa has just joined Williams so this is his first season with them. This is actually the first time Massa drives with a team that hasn't got a Ferrari engine. First he drove for Sauber and then Ferrari.

Previously I have written about the teammates of Ferrari, Lotus, Red Bull, Force India, Mercedes and Sauber.

I'll do this the same way as I've always done. So first the year, then the teammate and how the season went.

I'm gonna start with Felipe Massa because he got to Formula One first.

2002 - Nick Heidfeld. After Räikkönen got a seat at McLaren Peter Sauber signed Felipe Massa as Nick Heidfeld's teammate. Sauber said that Massa was even better than Räikkönen and was sure that everybody would see it. Unfortunately Massa didn't perform as good as Räikkönen a year before. Massa was 14th in the championship with 4 points. Heidfeld was 10th with 7.

2003 - Peter Sauber didn't want to continue Massa's contract because of "numerous mistakes" in 2002. Massa became Ferrari's test driver and later Sauber wanted him back for the 2004 season.

2004 - Giancarlo Fisichella. Massa had gotten better but this time he had a more experienced teammate against him. In the end Fisichella was higher up in the standings with 22 points and Massa had only 12.

2005 - Jaques Villeneuve. Now he had a former world champion driving with him. For the first time ever Massa was better than his teammate! The former world champion got 9 points and Massa got 11. This was not because of luck or bad luck. Massa was much better that season and got a seat at Ferrari for the next season.

2006 - Michael Schumacher. Schumi was fighting for the championship with Alonso. Massa was just the "junior teammate" who came to learn from the legend how it's done. Massa was 2nd in his first qulaifying with Ferrari right after Schumacher. Later on he started winning races and got better and better.

2007 - Kimi Räikkönen. The Iceman won his first race with Ferrari and 5 more races that same season. He also won the championship before Hamilton, Alonso and Massa. The brazilian said that 2008 was going to be his turn.

2008 - Kimi Räikkönen. This year Ferrari had a lot of technical problems. Massa retired 3 times and Räikkönen 5 times. Sometimes they had big problems even though they got to finish the race. Massa was more lucky than Räikkönen and was 2nd in the championship. It seemed for a while that he was the champion but Hamilton overtook Timo Glock on the last lap and won Massa by a single point. Anyways this was the second time he won his teammate in Formula One.

2009 - Kimi Räikkönen. This year the car was even worse. Räikkönen only won one single race for Ferrari and Massa had a serious accident in Hungary. He was replaced by Luca Badoer and later Giancarlo Fisichella who were not nearly as good as Massa. If you count Massa's, Badoer's and Fisichella's points together you get less points than Räikkönen got from the whole season.

2010 - Fernando Alonso. Alonso won him by 108 points with the new scoring system and was 2nd in the championship. He lost the championship in the last race when he got stuck behind Petrov. Massa was far behind in 6th place in the end of the season.

2011 - Fernando Alonso. Alonso's victory over Massa was even greater. 139 points more!

2012 - Fernando Alonso.
Even more! 156 points, but Ferrari gave Felipe Massa one last chance to prove himself to the team.

2013 - Fernando Alonso. Alonso won Massa again very clearly which forced Ferrari to sign Kimi Räikkönen instead of Massa. They lost faith in him but wished him well.

Then it's Valtteri Bottas! The list is very short because he has driven only one season in Formula One.

2013 - Pastor Maldonado. He was expected to be better than Bottas but it wasn't so. Bottas got 4 points and Maldonado got 1. According to the Williams team Bottas seamed to be a more mature driver than Maldonado even though he was a rookie. Bottas also got a P3 in the Canadian qualifying session which was a big surprise. Williams had an awful car in 2013.

People are not going to agree with me on this one but I really think that Bottas has a chance of being better than Massa in 2014. Let's wait and see..

That was it for today and tomorrow I shall compare the Marussia drivers.

Comparing the 2014 teammates: Sauber

In the last "comparing the teammates"-post I promised to compare the Sauber drivers.

Esteban Gutierrez has been with the team for a few years already. First he was the testdriver and last year he got to be Nico Hulkenberg's teammate who was driving for Sauber at the time.

Adrian Sutil has just joined them so this is his first season with them. This is actually the first time Sutil drives with another team than Force India. Yes he started with Spyker but it became Force India later.

Previously I have written about the teammates of Ferrari, Lotus, Red Bull, Force India and Mercedes.

If you haven't read them then just click on the links below:

I'll do this the same way as I've always done. So first the year, then the teammate and how the season went.

I'm gonna start with Adrian Sutil because he got to Formula One first.

2007 - Christijan Albers, Marcus Winkelhock, Sakon Yamamoto. Spyker had a lot of different drivers that year but Sutil got to drive every single race. The team was the worst of 2007 but Sutil managed to get a point anyway with a 8th place in Fuji, Japan. No need to say anything about the teammates because Sutil was clearly the best of them.

2008 - Giancarlo Fisichella. Force India continued like Spyker and didn't score a single point that year. If you look at the statistics then Sutil was better. He got better positions in races and was higher up in the championship because of that.

2009 - Giancarlo Fisichella. Now the team was better and so was Fisi! They both got points (8-5) but Fisi was better. He even got a second place in Spa and was signed by Ferrari after that race. He replaced Luca Badoer who had earlier replaced Felipe Massa.

2010 - Vitantonio Liuzzi. This guy didn't stand a chance against Sutil and was replaced by Paul di Resta the following year. Sutil was 11th in the standings with 47 points and Liuzzi was 15th with 21 points.

2011 - Paul di Resta. This time Sutil was even better. He was 9th with 42 points in the standings when di Resta was only 13th with 27 points. Even though Sutil was better than di Resta they replaced him with Hulkenberg the following year.

2012 - He didn't get a seat because he almost went to jail. The German driver was in a nightclub in Shanghai in April celebrating his friend Lewis Hamilton’s victory in the Chinese Grand Prix, when an incident occurred with a champagne glass which led to Eric Lux, the co-owner of the Lotus Renault GP team receiving a serious wound to the neck.
Lux went to hospital immediately and was angry that Sutil and his friends left the club without offering assistance or apologising. Sutil did apologise later.

2013 - Paul di Resta. Because Hulkenberg wanted to drive for Sauber Sutil got another chance with Force India. Sutil started the season with a bang and even led the race in Australia for a while after he was overtaken by Kimi Räikkönen who eventually won the race. If we look at the whole season then Sutil lost to his teammate. He got only 29 points and was 13th in the standings when di Resta got 48 points and was 12th.

Esteban Gutierrez is next and the list is very short.

2013 - Nico Hulkenberg. This has been his only season so far and he got a very good driver against him. The dream was to beat him and get everybody's respect. The truth was totally different because Nico Hulkenberg is in my opinion one of the best drivers in F1. He wiped the floor with Gutierrez! Gutierrez was 16th in the standings and got 6 points. Hulkenberg was 10th with 51 points!

I guess it's pretty clear that Adrian Sutil is going to be better than Esteban Gutierrez. Anyways I still hope for Gutierrez to be better because I always like to cheer for the underdog.

That was it for today and tomorrow I shall compare the Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

Comparing the 2014 teammates: Mercedes

In the last "comparing teammates"-post I promised to compare the Mercedes drivers. These drivers are the first ones that have already been teammates for a season. The previous posts have all been about teammates that haven't driven together yet. They were drivers from Ferrari, Lotus, Red Bull and Force India.

The previous posts if you haven't read them already:

http://f14life.blogspot.fi/2013/11/comparing-2014-teammates-scuderia.html
http://f14life.blogspot.fi/2013/12/comparing-2014-teammates-red-bull-racing.html
http://f14life.blogspot.fi/2013/12/comparing-2014-teammates-lotus.html
http://f14life.blogspot.fi/2013/12/comparing-2014-teammates-force-india.html

They used to be teammates also when they were teenagers but I only know a little about that so I'll focus on F1.

I'll do this the same way as I've always done. So first the year, then the teammate and how the season went.

I'm gonna start with Nico Rosberg because he got to Formula One first.

2006 - Mark Webber. Nico started his career in Formula One with a bang. He set the fastest lap in his first ever race, got points and was 3rd in his second qualifying session. Nice start but his teammate was tuff! All of the races where they both finished Webber was always better. In the end of the season he also got more points (7-4).

2007 - Alexander Wurz and Kazuki Nakajima. This time Nico got more points than these two got combined. His "training" season was over and he really showed who was boss when he managed to beat his much more experienced teammate (Wurz). Later Wurz decided to retire from Formula One and the test driver Nakajima replaced him. He wasn't nearly as good as either one of the original drivers of 2007.

2008 - Kazuki Nakajima. Now Nakajima had a new chance to show what he was made of but lost by 8 points to Rosberg (17-9). Williams wasn't that good at the time but Nico managed to get his first ever podium in F1 at Melbourne.

2009 - Kazuki Nakajima. This season Nico was even better than the previous season. You could clearly see that Rosberg was the better driver and Nakajima had to leave the series after this season. Nico got 34,5 points and Nakajima didn't get a single point that season.

2010 - Michael Schumacher. The 7 time world champion came back as a Mercedes driver and became Rosberg's teammate. People said that Rosberg has a lot to learn from Michael but in the end he was better than Schumacher! It was probably because Michael had been away from the sport for a few years but still. Rosberg got 142 points and Schumacher only 72. That's almost twice the amount of points! Rosberg also got three podiums and Schumacher got none.

2011 - Michael Schumacher. Same thing continues in 2011, Rosberg is getting better results than Schumi but now the score is only 89-76. The car wasn't as good in 2011 than it was in 2010. They didn't get a single podium that year.

2012 - Michael Schumacher. Schumi's last year in F1 was worse than the seasons before. Rosberg got 93 points and Schumi only 49. Rosberg won his first race in China that year. It was also the first for the Mercedes GP team.

2013 - Lewis Hamilton. I will compare these two after I have first listed Hamilton's teammates.

Lewis Hamilton on the other hand started a year later than Rosberg and got a chance right away in a better car (McLaren of course). He was 3rd in his first race.

2007 - Fernando Alonso. Probably the worst possible teammate to beat that year. Alonso had just won the last two championships and was planning to win his third in a row. He could probably have done it that year but he focused too much on the young rookie Hamilton when he should have been keeping an eye on Räikkönen. Hamilton and Alonso got exactly the same amount of points and Kimi won them with one single point. That was the tightest fight in Formula One history! Because Hamilton had more 2nd places than Alonso he was higher up in the standings. In a way you can say that he was "better than Alonso".

2008 - Heikki Kovalainen. He got 53 points and won a race. Lewis on the other hand got 98 points and won the championship! You can't beat that!

2009 - Heikki Kovalainen. This was a very bad season for Heikki and McLaren as well so it was easy to beat him. Lewis got 49 points and Heikki only 22. McLaren didn't wanna continue Heikki's contract any further.

2010 - Jenson Button. The 2009 world champion joined McLaren as the 2008 world champion's teammate. People were sure that Jenson had no chance against Lewis but made everybody shut up by winning a race before him. In the end the score was 240-214 between the two of them which ment that Lewis was better (as the press had predicted).

2011 - Jenson Button. This time Jenson was hungry to beat his teammate and did just that with a score of 270-227. Button was runner up in the championship and Hamilton was 5th.

2012 - Jenson Button. Hamilton's last year with McLaren and also the deciding year; who was better Hamilton or Button? Hamilton won 4 races and Button 3. If we look at the points it was 190-188 between them. Very close but Hamilton won with two points.

The last thing is to compare Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg with each other!

This will give us a pretty good picture what might happen this season. The points were 189-171 between Hamilton and Rosberg in 2013. Very close!

We also have to remember that in the same race where everybody were focusing on multi21, Ross Brawn told Rosberg to back off and keep his position. He had more speed than Hamilton but the Mercedes team didn't want them to fight and perhaps take each other out of the race.

Rosberg also retired 3 times in 2013 when Lewis only once.

Lewis won one single race and Nico two (one of them was in Monaco!). The points say that Hamilton is better but if you look at the whole picture it looks like Rosberg was better than Hamilton. Believe it or not!

That was it for today and tomorrow I shall compare the Sauber drivers Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez.

Review of the 2014 season's first tests in Jerez

First of all I would like to say that the 2014 cars were really ugly! I mean take a look at this mess:

The FIA is to blame for all of this. The teams are just trying to get the best possible cars that fit the new regulations. If the cars look like this as their best then what can we do? Just have to get used to it.

The sound was different also. It was not as loud, the pitch is clearly lower and the cars seem to be slower as well. Guess we have to get used to that too.

The drivers didn't seem to like the sound either. Hulkenberg said that it doesn't sound like a Formula One car, it sounds like a DTM car or something like that. Kimi said that he didn't care as long as the car goes forward..

So how did the tests go? Ask that from any Renault team and they will give you the finger. It was a disaster for them.

In the last 10 years a car with a Renault engine has won the championship 6 times! (Alonso 2005-2006 and Vettel 2010-2013). This is so weird that suddenly the best motor is the worst! It will be an interesting season I give you that.

Now it seems that Mercedes is the best motor manufacturer and Ferrari is there somewhere in the middle.

McLaren, Mercedes, Force India and Williams seemed to be flying out there with much less problems. So this doesn't look any better. Now it's just another engine manufacturer that dominates the rest.

I remember saying earlier that Mercedes and Ferrari will be the best teams this year but didn't expect the other Mercedes teams to be this close! The Renaults are far away behind..

I would like to see a season where every team is as equal as possible. It's boring when you almost every time know who is going to win and no double points is helping the situation. It just makes it more weird.

It was nice to see old drivers in different teams such as Massa at Williams, Ricciardo at Red Bull, Perez at Force India and Sutil at Sauber. It was also nice to see Hulkenberg and Räikkönen go back to their old teams (Force India and Ferrari).

I was very glad to see Kobayashi back in a Formula One car as well. He really deserves to be in this series and F1 really needs a character like him. The sad part is that he is driving for Caterham which rarely gets good results.

The new guys Magnussen, Ericsson and Kvyat were all driving like they had been in the Formula One series for years. Kevin Magnussen even set the fastest lap time for the whole tests!

Kevin Magnussen's father Jan was supposed to be the next best thing in F1 but he never really made it. Let's hope young Kevin has a bit more skills than his father. Would really like him to push hard on Jenson Button.

Kevin Magnussen, McLaren

These were the first tests of the year so there isn't really that much to say yet. Let's hope that the teams can work out their problems at the next tests so that we will have a clean fight between all teams at the first GP.

Last but not least the results combined. Here we can clearly see all the times and how many laps they drove:

This week’s official aggregate test times from Jerez:

F1 TREASURES IX

Well, well, well... haven't done these for a while so thought I'd post one right now.
Didn't know that people even were that interested of what kind of F1 stuff I buy but some wrote that I should continue.

In December I ordered myself some Christmas presents from eBay and also from the official Formula One page. 4 DVD's and a bluray.

The bluray was supposed to be the 2012 season review but I never got it! I ordered it from a spanish company on eBay and they just refunded my money and never told me about it. What kind of customer service was that?!

The DVD's all came like they were supposed to. The 2013 review from the official Formula One page (f1.com) and the 2008, 2010 and 2011 reviews from eBay.

I have been saving them for a day like this. It's been snowing like hell for the last couple of days, the Australian GP is over a month away and I really miss watching Formula One.

Now it's time to make some nice food and watch these DVD's back to back! My wife is going to be thrilled. She hates F1..

I'll be posting a review of the Jerez testing sometime tomorrow so remember to check that out if you have time ;)

Jerez: Day 4

Williams’ Felipe Massa set the pace at Jerez on Friday, as the opening pre-season test of 2014 drew to an intriguing close.

The Brazilian was one of seven drivers - six of them using Mercedes or Ferrari power - to complete more than 50 laps of the Spanish circuit, but once again all three Renault-powered teams were forced to cut their running short because of technical issues.

Running got underway in wet conditions, but that didn’t deter all of the runners from going out on track. Nico Rosberg quickly worked his way up to a race simulation run (which included three pitstops) in Mercedes’ F1 W05 and by lunchtime the German had accumulated 91 laps.

The times ramped up in the dry afternoon session, with morning pacesetter Fernando Alonso initially keeping Ferrari at the top of the timesheets. The Spaniard’s time was soon eclipsed by his former team mate, Felipe Massa, who appeared more than comfortable at the wheel of Williams’ Mercedes-powered FW36, improving several times before the chequered flag appeared.

“It wasn't a great day because it was raining, but we completed some laps in the wet conditions which was interesting to understand how the car behaves in wet, with the tyres and new power unit,” Massa explained.

“We managed to do many more laps today than we have in the last three days which is important. Today we didn't have any issues with the car which I think is also another step forward. We now need to concentrate and prepare with an aim to do more laps per day in Bahrain.

“Overall, I'm happy with my first days with Williams and I'm pleased with what I have seen in the team this week. For sure it is important to be competitive, but testing is testing, and we now need to look to prepare for Bahrain and then towards the first race, which is the most important thing.”

Massa and Alonso finished the day with impressive lap tallies (86 and 115 respectively), as well as first and second places on the timesheets. Just behind the leading duo was new Force India test driver Daniel Juncadella who had an impressive first run in the VJM07.

McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen, who was fourth fastest on the day, completed five fewer laps than mileage leader Alonso and was responsible for two red flag stoppages during the session. The Dane spun at the chicane, and just before the end of the session he crashed at Turn 10.

The fifth and sixth fastest times were clocked by Lewis Hamilton, who’d taken over the Mercedes from Rosberg at lunch, and Jules Bianchi who enjoyed his maiden outing in Marussia’s MR03.

“The car feels great to drive and I’m pleased that I was able to achieve some good mileage,” the Frenchman said.

“You always want more, of course, but there is a lot to work through and understand, so we have to be patient and go through the programme in the right way, especially as we have had damp conditions to contend with also.

“At the end, once we were happy with the systems work, it was nice to put the slicks on and start putting some laps together. It is early days but we were quite happy with the pace in the conditions and for our programme. Not a bad start.”

Elsewhere, Adrian Sutil followed up his spin on Thursday with another one on Friday, bringing out the red flags when he lost the rear end of his Sauber C33 at the chicane and became beached in the gravel. He ended up seventh on the timesheets, just ahead of Rosberg.

The final three times on the board were taken Renault runners - Caterham’s Kamui Kobayashi, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.

“We were working through a number of different engine maps and were definitely making progress but just after lunch we had another engine problem which meant we had to stop,” explained Kobayashi.

Joining the Japanese driver in the pits was Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian having completed just seven laps before pulling in for the day.

“It's been a very difficult test,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner as his squad packed up having completed just 21 laps in four days in the new RB10.

“We have had numerous Renault issues as well as chassis cooling issues, which have affected our progress. However, despite the lack of mileage, what we have managed to learn shows that the problems should be solvable for the next test in Bahrain.

“Part of the purpose of this early test was to learn about any issues ahead of the start of the season and there will now be a lot of focus on the dyno over the next few weeks.”

From Jerez, the teams will now head back to their respective factories to consolidate their findings and prepare for the second pre-season test, which takes place in Bahrain on February 19-22.

Unofficial Friday test times from Jerez:
1. Felipe Massa, Williams, 1m 28.229s, 86 laps
2. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1m 29.145s, 115 laps
3. Daniel Juncadella, Force India, 1m 29.457s, 81 laps
4. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren, 1m 30.806s, 110 laps
5. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1m 30.822s, 41 laps
6. Jules Bianchi, Marussia, 1m 32.222s, 25 laps
7. Adrian Sutil, Sauber, 1m 36.571s, 69 laps
8. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, 1m 36.951s 91 laps
9. Kamui Kobayashi, Caterham, 1m 43.193s, 54 laps
10. Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso, 1m 44.016s, 9 laps
11. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull, 1m 45.374s, 7 laps

Jerez: Day 3 results

Kevin Magnussen was fastest of the day

Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen ensured that McLaren finished at the top of the timesheets for the second day in a row on Thursday by setting the pace on the third day of pre-season testing in Spain.

But there was more frustration for world champions Red Bull as technical issues restricted Daniel Ricciardo to just three laps in the new RB10.
