Camara set for Silverstone test debut with Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso will hand a Formula One test debut to Brazilian racer Sergio Sette Camara at the upcoming in-season session at Silverstone.

The 18-year-old Red Bull Junior Team member, currently seventh in the FIA European Formula Three standings, will drive the Italian team's Ferrari-powered STR11 on the second day of the two-day test, which immediately follows July’s 2016 Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

“I’m very happy and excited to be testing with Scuderia Toro Rosso,” commented Camara, who trialled an F1 car for the first time with a demonstration run in a 2012 vintage Red Bull RB8 earlier this year.

“It’s a great opportunity which I’ve worked very hard for and I’d like to thank everyone who has made this possible, especially Red Bull.

“This will be my first official Formula One test and I will make sure I do the best job possible as well as have fun - it’s not something that happens every day! Silverstone is a great track which I know quite well as I’ve already driven there before, so this will definitely help me on the day to focus on the car and all the new information without having to learn a new layout at the same time.

“I just can’t wait to drive out of the garage, it will definitely be a moment I will never forget!”

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost added: “Giving young drivers, mainly those from the Red Bull Junior Team, a real taste of Formula One, is something we have become accustomed to doing at Toro Rosso.

“Personally, I find it fascinating to see how these youngsters adapt, not just to the extra power, downforce and braking of a Formula One car, but also how they react to the pressure of a day in the F1 spotlight.

“It provides a valuable insight into how they might progress in the future. Therefore I am pleased to welcome Sergio to our team for the day and I hope that it will be a mutually beneficial experience.”

Carlos Sainz is scheduled to drive the STR11 on the opening day of the test. However, F1 rules dictate that each team must dedicate two of their four days of in-season testing to running young drivers.

2016 Austrian Grand Prix preview

Austrian GP 1997

The Austrian GP is here again! I have been in Austria and I absolutely love the whole country. A very special and beautiful place so why not combine it with Formula One? ;)

What do we remember from this track?

Two years ago Felipe Massa took pole position and Valtteri Bottas was second in qualifying. Everybody were stunned. In the race the Mercs got ahead with Nico Rosberg as the winner and Lewis Hamilton 2nd. Valtteri Bottas was 3rd and Felipe Massa was 4th. I am pretty sure that this year Williams will also surprise us and be ahead of Ferrari.

In 2014 it was also the first time in many years they raced in Austria. So when was the previous race before 2014?

It was in 2003. Michael Schumacher was fighting for the championship with Kimi Räikkönen and Juan Pablo Montoya. They were no match for Michael and his Ferrari, so of course he won the race. Kimi was second and Juan Pablo retired from the race.

What kind of other memories do I have from this track then? I remember in 1998 when Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard took a 1-2 for McLaren and Schumacher was 3rd. Those three were fighting for the championship in 1998. In the end it was just Mika vs. Michael.

What about this year?

If we look at the most experienced drivers who have raced in Austria before 2014 there is Kimi Räikkönen who I mentioned earlier, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. From these drivers Kimi has been the most successful there so keep an eye on him. He even took a 4th place with Sauber in his first year.

From the younger drivers I am pretty sure that Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo will be good here.

Then it's time for my predictions.

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:
  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
  2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes
  3. Valtteri Bottas, Williams

Fastest lap: Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull

Surprise: Williams will shine again.

POINTS: 1st - 3

2nd - 5
3rd - 10

+ possible bonus points

HOW IT WORKS: the aim of the game is simply predict who comes where in the race (top3). A total of 18 points can be won on a race day. For example if you get winner and and 3rd place right but 2nd wrong you get 13 points.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PREDICTIONS: send an email to f14lifeblog@gmail.com or message the Facebook page to submit your predictions. You have until lights out to make them. If you submit them when the race has started they won't count. So be quick!

Drivers Report Back After Inaugural Baku Race

Pirelli reveals tyre compounds for Belgium and Japan

Pirelli have confirmed the three tyre compounds that will be available to the teams at the upcoming races in Spa-Francorchamps and Suzuka.

The Italian tyre manufacturer will bring their supersoft, soft and medium compounds to Belgium - a combination that has been chosen for five of the eight races to date.

The teams must keep a set of softs and a set of mediums for the race, with at least one of those sets used during the Grand Prix.

For Suzuka meanwhile Pirelli will offer their three hardest compounds - the soft, medium and hard - to teams. Two sets of hard tyres form the mandatory selection, meaning teams will have to use at least one set of hard tyres during the race.

The combination of soft, medium and hard has only been used once so far in 2016, in Spain - although Pirelli will bring the same combination to both Silverstone and Malaysia.
The 2016 tyre choices so far:

Australia - supersoft, soft, medium
Bahrain - supersoft, soft, medium
China - supersoft, soft, medium
Russia - supersoft, soft, medium
Spain - soft, medium, hard
Monaco - ultrasoft, supersoft, soft
Canada - ultrasoft, supersoft, soft
Europe - supersoft, soft, medium
Austria - ultrasoft, supersoft, soft
Great Britain - soft, medium, hard
Hungary - supersoft, soft, medium
Germany - supersoft, soft, medium
Belgium - supersoft, soft, medium
Singapore - ultrasoft, supersoft, soft
Malaysia - soft, medium, hard
Japan - soft, medium, hard

2016 European Grand Prix review

The first race in Baku made us all wait for something really awesome but the race was actually very boring. I watched the race again today and could not come up with much to say.

The race start was very clean and no drama what so ever. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg had a great start and lead the race from the beginning till the end. It was a grand slam for him.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen showed us that Ferrari is ahead of Red Bull at the moment. Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen couldn't keep the Ferraris behind them.

One thing happened in the middle of the race that could have shown us some drama but didn't - THE BLUE PLASTIC BAGS! They got stuck on both Vettel's and Räikkönen's cars but didn't really do them that much harm.

Speaking of harm, Räikkönen took a very stupid penalty in the race when he drove across the white lines on the pit lane entry. It was a 5 second penalty which they added on the final results.

Force India's Sergio Perez was chasing Räikkönen the whole race and finally overtook him on the last lap. He was very proud of the move but in reality Räikkönen let him pass because he was on fuel saving mode. He also knew that the 5 second penalty will anyway make him drop a position.

I am serious when I say this - there was not much else happening in the race. I hope the race will be more interesting next year.

Now I will continue to the predictions and the results:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG

The race:
  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - WRONG. He was 5th behind Kimi Räikkönen.
  2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - WRONG. He won he race for the 5th time this season.
  3. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari - WRONG. He was 2nd and Sergio Perez was 3rd.
Fastest lap: Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - CORRECT

Surprise: McLaren will have a great race here - Alonso retired and Button was 11th so no points for the team.

Drivers Report Back | Canadian Grand Prix 2016

2016 Canadian Grand Prix review

As usual I will begin by talking about the start and it was an interesting one.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel had a super start from the second row and overtook both Mercs. Lewis Hamilton was too concentrated on his teammate Nico Rosberg so that he opened the door for Vettel who took the lead.

Hamilton pushed Rosberg off track and they even had small contact. This time nobody had to retire which was a good thing for Mercedes. They didn't want to see the same thing that happened in Barcelona.

The Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were right behind the top three in 4th and 5th. Ricciardo was faster than Verstappen and the team told him not to hold him back. He did not let him pass and started to clock faster laps.

McLaren's Jenson Button retired on lap 11 when his engine was on fire. Luckily Fernando Alonso didn't get problems like that.

The virtual safety car was deployed and Vettel pitted right away to gain an advantage. His teammate Kimi Räikkönen also pitted but he was a bit unlucky when the virtual safety car speed limit was over. He dropped back and Vettel didn't. Ferrari's pace was really good and both of the drivers managed to overtake cars easily in the race.

I have said the past two years that the Williams pit crew is the worst of the grid but this season they have shown some improvement. Both Felipe Massa and Bottas had very good stops and good race strategies. They were unlucky when Massa had to retire but Bottas' car was working perfectly. He even overtook Ricciardo on track which looks very good for Williams and Bottas as well. Some say that Bottas might switch teams after this season and he should show more moves like this if he wants a better seat for next season.

Red Bull on the other hand messed up Ricciardo's race again with a very poor pit stop. They had problems with his front right tyre and lost a couple of seconds. At least it wasn't as bad as in Monaco.

Mercedes had better strategies than Ferrari and got Hamilton in front of Vettel later on in the race.

We also witnessed another legendary moment with Kimi when Ferrari told him on the radio to "take it easy". Kimi replied "I can't take it easy and keep these guys behind me!". He was of course talking about Bottas and Ricciardo who are both very fast and dangerous drivers.

Nothing else to mention really. The race had it's moments but all in all I felt like the race took too long. I had waited for more from Canada and was a little disappointed.

Then it's time for my predictions and the results!

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - CORRECT

The race:
  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - CORRECT
  2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - WRONG. He was 5th after technical difficulties.
  3. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari - WRONG. He was 2nd and Valtteri Bottas was 3rd.
Fastest lap: Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - CORRECT

Surprise: Felipe Massa is usually good here! - He retired but his teammate was on the podium.

In numbers - the Canadian Grand Prix

Did you know that the Montreal track layout has changed seven times over the years? Or that just one Canadian driver has won his home race? We present the key stats and figures ahead of this weekend's Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2016...

3

The number of venues that have hosted the Canadian Grand Prix. Current home Montreal has staged the event since 1978, but prior to that Mosport in Ontario held it eight times and Mont-Tremblant in Quebec twice

235

The number of laps led in Canada by Lewis Hamilton – more than any other driver in history bar Michael Schumacher on 433. Hamilton’s closest current rival is Sebastian Vettel on 157.

7

The victory tally achieved by the most successful driver in Canadian Grand Prix history - Michael Schumacher. Closest to him in the wins table in Lewis Hamilton, currently on four.

3.4

The maximum lateral G-Force experienced by drivers around the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve - at Turn 5.

6

The number of current drivers to have won the Canadian Grand Prix. In addition to the aforementioned Lewis Hamilton, the following have each taken one victory in Montreal: Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo.

45

The percentage of the Montreal lap spent at full throttle.

4

The record number of fastest laps achieved in Canadian Grand Prix history - an honour shared by Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher.

2004

The last year in which Ferrari won the Canadian Grand Prix - with Michael Schumacher at the wheel.

10

The lowest grid position from which the Canadian Grand Prix has been won – by Jacques Laffite for Ligier in 1981. In more recent years, Kimi Raikkonen won from seventh in 2005, as did Jenson Button in 2011.

2.36

The fastest pit-stop time – in seconds – recorded during last year’s Canadian Grand Prix, achieved by Toro Rosso and Max Verstappen.

253.248

The race distance - in kilometres - of the shortest Canadian Grand Prix in history, the 1997 event in Montreal, which was shortened from 69 to 54 laps because of a heavy crash involving Prost’s Olivier Panis.

4:04:39.537

The total race time - in hours, minutes and seconds - for the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, the longest race in F1 history, which included a suspension of over two hours due to heavy rain.

341.9

The highest figure - in km/h - recorded through the speed trap during last year’s Canadian Grand Prix. It was set by Romain Grosjean for Lotus.

1792

The number of the 2016 season’s 6396 racing laps already completed heading into this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

7

The number of times the track configuration has changed at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve since its inception on the F1 calendar in 1978. The last change was made ahead of the 2002 event, when the pit lane was extended to avoid first-corner collisions, and the second hairpin was moved back, shortening the circuit.

2016 Canadian Grand Prix preview

The Monaco Grand Prix is behind us and now it's time to move to Canada! The track is in Montreal and there has always been entertaining races. I have no doubt that this will be one of the best races this season.

What about the previous races in Canada? This is actually the place where Hamilton took his first victory back in 2007. I remember people saying that Hamilton was leading the championship because he had better consistent results than Alonso, Räikkönen and Massa. The three other "better" drivers had won races but Hamilton was still leading the championship with podium finishes (2nds and 3rds). Then in Canada he showed everybody that he is a superstar who is also able to win races. He also won the race after that in the US.

The same race in 2007 was also the race where Robert Kubica had his terrible accident. The following year he won the race.

Here's a video of the accident:

What else has happened in Canada? In 2011 Canada offered us the longest F1 race in history (4:04:39.537). Sebastian Vettel was leading the race from the start till the last few laps and made a small mistake. Jenson Button was behind and overtook him right away and won the race. He was waiting the whole day for Vettel to make a mistake and he finally did. Sebastian Vettel was soooo frustrated...

Speaking of frustrated who remembers what happened in 1991? Nigel Mansell was about to win the race and was already waving to the crowd on the last lap but then his car broke down. Nelson Piquet was behind him and won the race for Benetton.

I have always enjoyed the Canadian Grand Prix and will most likely enjoy this one as well.

Then it's time for my predictions again!

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:
  1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
  2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes
  3. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari
Fastest lap: Nico Rosberg, Mercedes

Surprise: Felipe Massa is usually good here!
