Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel had a super start from the second row and overtook both Mercs. Lewis Hamilton was too concentrated on his teammate Nico Rosberg so that he opened the door for Vettel who took the lead.
Hamilton pushed Rosberg off track and they even had small contact. This time nobody had to retire which was a good thing for Mercedes. They didn't want to see the same thing that happened in Barcelona.
The Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were right behind the top three in 4th and 5th. Ricciardo was faster than Verstappen and the team told him not to hold him back. He did not let him pass and started to clock faster laps.
McLaren's Jenson Button retired on lap 11 when his engine was on fire. Luckily Fernando Alonso didn't get problems like that.
The virtual safety car was deployed and Vettel pitted right away to gain an advantage. His teammate Kimi Räikkönen also pitted but he was a bit unlucky when the virtual safety car speed limit was over. He dropped back and Vettel didn't. Ferrari's pace was really good and both of the drivers managed to overtake cars easily in the race.
I have said the past two years that the Williams pit crew is the worst of the grid but this season they have shown some improvement. Both Felipe Massa and Bottas had very good stops and good race strategies. They were unlucky when Massa had to retire but Bottas' car was working perfectly. He even overtook Ricciardo on track which looks very good for Williams and Bottas as well. Some say that Bottas might switch teams after this season and he should show more moves like this if he wants a better seat for next season.
Red Bull on the other hand messed up Ricciardo's race again with a very poor pit stop. They had problems with his front right tyre and lost a couple of seconds. At least it wasn't as bad as in Monaco.
Mercedes had better strategies than Ferrari and got Hamilton in front of Vettel later on in the race.
We also witnessed another legendary moment with Kimi when Ferrari told him on the radio to "take it easy". Kimi replied "I can't take it easy and keep these guys behind me!". He was of course talking about Bottas and Ricciardo who are both very fast and dangerous drivers.
Nothing else to mention really. The race had it's moments but all in all I felt like the race took too long. I had waited for more from Canada and was a little disappointed.
Then it's time for my predictions and the results!
Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - CORRECT
The race:
- Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - CORRECT
- Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - WRONG. He was 5th after technical difficulties.
- Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari - WRONG. He was 2nd and Valtteri Bottas was 3rd.
Fastest lap: Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - CORRECT
Surprise: Felipe Massa is usually good here! - He retired but his teammate was on the podium.
Remember to post your own predictions to our F1-4-LIFE PREDICTORS LEAGUE.
The rules:
POINTS: 1st - 3
2nd - 5
3rd - 10
HOW IT WORKS: the aim of the game is simply predict who comes where in the race (top3). A total of 18 points can be won on a race day. If you get winner and and 3rd place right but 2nd wrong you get 13 points same if you get 1 correct. eg. 2nd you get 5 points. If a driver wins the race and you said he would come 2nd or 3rd no points would be awarded. Same if he came in another position, and you predicted that wrong. A table will be posted up every race weekend. The point scoring system will change once the cars become more competitive. Everyone will say a merc 1,2 so it won't be close or fun.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PREDICTIONS: send an email to f14lifeblog@gmail.com or message the Facebook page to submit your predictions. You have until lights out to make them. If you submit them when the race has started they won't count. So be quick! like the Mercedes.
