1988 Monaco Grand Prix (FULL RACE)

The man Ayrton Senna wanted to beat - Alain Prost.

This was Ayrton Senna's first Monaco GP as Alain Prost's teammate back in 1988. Senna was outstanding and his lead was phenomenal! Suddenly he made a small mistake and crashed into the wall before the tunnel. Prost's position was 2nd at that point and almost a minute behind. Of course, Prost won the race after Senna's crash.

Senna was so furious that he didn't even go to the pits. He walked straight to his hotel room and didn't wanna speak with no one.

Senna said later that his confidence was hurt badly but became an even stronger driver after that point.

Ayrton Senna on pole but Nigel Mansell was more successful in the race and got his first vistory in F1. Alain Prost became world champion and you can also see Frank Williams without his wheelchair in the end.

2013 Japanese Grand Prix Review

I watched this race with my phone's result stream application and later at home cause I was working on Sunday.
The fact that you can't see what's happening but know what's happening is irritating, especially when I always make sure that I see every single Grand Prix. I saw it this time too but it's different to see it live from TV.

Earlier I have said that I haven't had time to write that much but let's hope it will change now that the Finnish Celebrity Big Brother is over. I worked there as the executive editor.

But enough about my work and more about the Japanese Grand Prix!

Let's start with my guesses I made in the preview and continue from there:


Pole position: Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull

The race:

1. Mark Webber, Red Bull
2. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari
3. Kimi Räikkönen, Lotus

Fastest lap: Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull

Surprise: Sauber


The pole position was not made by Vettel but Mark Webber who I put as the winner. It wasn't that far off and I was happy for Mark.

Fastest lap was not correct cause it was made by the other Red Bull (Webber).

Then the race. I was so wrong when I said that Vettel is not going to win here. It actually looked for a while that I was going to be right, but for me, it clearly looked like Red Bull changed the tactics so that Webber wouldn't win and that Vettel would. They knew that Webber wouldn't let his teammate pass him. I was actually a bit pissed off to tell you the truth. Why can't they just let Mark win one race before he retires? Vettel is clearly going to be the champion again this year so what's the big deal? And if somebody says that Red Bull didn't do this to Mark then please spare me. This is my point of view and it's very hard to think anything else.

So Mark was second and Alonso was fourth. In third position I saw a Lotus but it wasn't Kimi as usual, it was Romain Grosjean! I am very surprised and glad for his sake. I just said a week ago that he has to step up and do something if he want's to stay in this sport. Then boom! One week after and he does this.

I also saw a vision of Sebastian Vettel getting hit in the beginning and maybe retiring. That was the reason why I thought that he wouldn't win. Anyways he got hit and damaged his front wing but it didn't wreck his race. It clearly looks like he is gonna secure his championship in India.

The surprise I said was Sauber and they did something that really DID surprise me. Both of the drivers took points in the same race for the first time this season. It was also Peter Sauber's birthday so congratulations to him for that as well.

What about the nice overtakings? Kimi Räikkönen overtook Esteban Gutierrez without DRS in a very difficult situation and Sebastian Vettel actually got to overtake somebody in this race! The "victim" was Romain Grosjean of course who had no chance against Vettel's maneuver.

Felipe Massa stood up for himself which was a good thing for him mentally but in the end Alonso overtook him anyway. Good that Alonso also actually overtook him and didn't ask the team to let him pass.

My biggest disappointment was probably Räikkönen's and Alonso's qualifying. Why can't these two ever get a good qualifying? But then in the race they both drive so good? I mean if these guys could get their qualifying to work they could both win more races. Maybe next year..

2013 Japanese Grand Prix Preview

One word, SUZUKA. Oh my god how I love this track! If you don't know about Suzuka you don't know anything about Formula One. Suzuka has sealed many championships and it may do it this time as well.

Let's start with a bit nostalgia.

Back in the days when I started to follow Formula One as a child the biggest names were Senna and Prost. They showed us all excitement and action every time the F1 circus was at the Suzuka track.
These two drivers made the sport world famous, even more famous than it was.

In 1988 Senna joined McLaren as the "younger driver" and Prost was the 2-time world champion at the time. Prost was confident that he was going to beat his new teammate like he had beaten everyone else (except Niki Lauda in 1984. Lauda won the championship by 0,5 point).

Senna and Prost were equal the whole 1988 season but October 30th in Suzuka it was all going to change. Senna took pole position the day before, Prost was 0,32 slower and took second place.



When the Grand Prix started Senna's car had problems and didn't move. Prost took the lead, Gerhard Berger was second and Senna dropped to 16th place if I remember correctly.

Senna was my biggest hero and didn't let any of his fans down. He overtook 7 cars on the first lap from 16th place and was now 8th when the second lap started. After that he overtook Riccardo Patrese and Alessandro Nannini and was 6th when the 3rd lap started. On the third lap he started catching Thierry Boutsen and Michele Alboreto and overtook them both before the 5th lap started and was now 4th.

In the front Prost was in the lead, Berger 2nd and Ivan Capelli 3rd. Capelli overtakes Berger on the 6th lap and Senna is approaching. On the 11th lap Senna also overtakes Berger and is now already 3rd. Then Capelli almost overtakes Prost and retires with a electrical problem. Senna is now 2nd!

Senna catches Prost and overtakes him on the 28th lap. People are going wild! Senna leads till the end and becomes world champion for the first time. He claimed that god showed himself on the last lap and Senna felt his presence.

Senna, Prost and Boutsen were on the podium. The happiest man was of course Ayrton Senna.



If we talk about the current drivers, the biggest legend in Suzuka is probably Kimi Räikkönen.
In 2005 Renault was the best car and Kimi drove for McLaren. He started from 17th place on the grid and started overtaking everybody in front of him. On the last lap Kimi overtook Giancarlo Fisichella and won the race.

Ron Dennis was crying of happiness even though Alonso had already secured his championship earlier. The year 2005 was very though for Kimi who lost the championship only because of too many retirements. He won more races than Alonso but unfortunately he also retired more times. In Suzuka he won from 17th place even though many thought that he wouldn't have motivation to push hard.



Let's come back to 2013 and talk about the next weekend.

You will see much fighting for positions, maybe a safety car and also another winner for a change! Sebastian Vettel will not win this weekend! I am counting on it.

Come on Webber! You have to win a race before you retire! This is the race!

This is from Estoril, Portugal in 1989. Gerhard Berger started from second place and actually won the race by over half a minute in the end (Alain Prost was 32 seconds from Berger). You can jump to different time points if you like cause the race is obviously very long.
