2016 Australian Grand Prix preview

The season's first GP weekend is always one of the most interesting. Some drivers have switched teams, the cars are brand new, some new regulations maybe and also because we have waited for the season to start for so long.

Like I usually do I will continue by talking about the track and some previous races in Melbourne.

The track is actually a street circuit around the Albert Park lake and it looks like this:

Melbourne - Albert Park has been a part of Formula One since the year 1996 when Damon Hill won the first ever race there. If we talk about the current drivers then the most successful driver at Albert Park is probably Jenson Button. Let's see...

Jenson Button has won there three times in 2009, 2010 and 2012. He has also taken his first pole position there with Honda in 2006.

Then there is Kimi Räikkönen who has won 2 races at Albert Park in 2007 with Ferrari and in 2013 with Lotus.
He started his career in 2001 by taking 6th place for Sauber at that same circuit. The following year he replaced the two time world champion Mika Häkkinen at McLaren and took his first podium in the first race at Melbourne. In 2006 he was 2nd right after Fernando Alonso.

Alonso has won only one race there in 2006 but has been on the podium 4 times excluding the win. Unfortunately McLaren hasn't shown any good improvement so he wont be standing on the top spot this weekend.

Then there is Lewis Hamilton who won in 2008 and last year as well. He's also been on the podium 3 times excluding the wins.

Oh and Sebastian Vettel has also won there once in 2011 and he has been on the podium 3 times excluding the win. Now with the improved Ferrari he might do pretty good so keep an eye on him this weekend.

Statistically the best drivers at the Australian GP are the world champions Button, Räikkönen, Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel. Of course we have to keep in mind that Button has raced there the most, Räikkönen was away for two years and Hamilton+Vettel are younger drivers who started back in 2007.

Both Button and Räikkönen won with two different teams. Button with Brawn and McLaren, Räikkönen with Ferrari and Lotus. This year again Button drives for McLaren and Räikkönen for Ferrari.

I think that Hamilton still has the best chances because Mercedes has shown very good pace in the winter testing as they did last season as well.

Last but not least my predictions:

Pole position: Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

The race:

1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes
3. Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari

Fastest lap: Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari

Surprise: Kimi Räikkönen will do much better than last year!

2015 Australian Grand Prix review

The first race is now in the past and now it's time to review it.

First of all there was a lot of drivers that didn't race. Marussia or Manor F1 Team didn't participate in the race because they weren't ready for it yet. Fernando Alonso was preparing himself for the Malaysian GP because he hurt himself in testing earlier. Kevin Magnussen was the one to replace him but couldn't start the race because of his car didn't make it to the grid. Valtteri Bottas hurt his back in qualifying and didn't get FIA's permission to race. Apparently he couldn't get out of the car quickly enough and they told him not to race. Daniil Kvyat's Red Bull couldn't get to the grid either just like Magnussen's McLaren. Red Bull are not happy with their Renault engines.

What about the start? Kimi Räikkönen overtook Sebastian Vettel but got pushed out of the track by that same teammate. Carlos Sainz Jr. smashed into his rear and Felipe Nasr touched him from the side. Very bad start for Kimi but he managed to continue. He blamed Carlos Sainz Jr. for the whole incident.

Pastor Maldonado was next to Felipe Nasr when he touched Räikkönen and spun off. Pastor Maldonado was the first one to retire from the race.

Daniel Ricciardo had a bad start which clearly was because of his car and not his driving skills. The rest of the race he drove very well but couldn't match Räikkönen's and Massa's superior cars speed.

Like I said Kimi Räikkönen drove much better than 12 months ago but lost a lot of time after his first pitstop. Ferrari really messed up his race when they had problems with his rear tyre. Sebastian Vettel had also a bit slower pitstop than usual.

Räikkönen overtook a lot of cars again and had to make his second pitstop. This time they left the same rear tyre a bit loose and he had to retire. Autosprint.com wrote that it was Kimi's fault and not Ferrari's (strange statement if you ask me). Ferrari did not blame him for the error.

Toro Rosso had similar problems in the pits with Carlos Sainz Jr.'s car which cost him some time. Why is so many teams messing up in the pits? I don't get it.

The other Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen had to retire when his Renault engine failed. Red Bull is not happy at all when the engines work like that or don't work at all.

Both Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson had a very good race. They showed us all that Sauber is better than Force India at the moment. I am happy for Sauber because they were last in the championship last year.

Marcus Ericsson was the first Swede to get points in F1 since the early 90's.

In the front it was boring! Lewis Hamilton led and Nico Rosberg followed from the beginning till the end.

Sebastian Vettel was behind the two Mercedes drivers and did a good job on his first Ferrari stint. The Italians love him already and some say that he will achieve even more than Michael Schumacher did at Ferrari. That has always been Vettel's dream also.

Only 11 cars finished the race and the only car without points was Jenson Button's McLaren. They were still happy that they managed to finish the race. McLaren had so little time to test in the winter that this years races are just about to learn how the new engine works. Sad but true and I hope they will get better. McLaren and Honda are a legendary pair in Formula One. Everybody remember that the last time they worked together they won 4 championships in just 5 seasons.

I don't have much else to say but all in all it's nice that the season has started even though the race was a bit boring. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a positive surprise on the podium.

Last but not least my predictions and how well I did:

The race:

1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - CORRECT
2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - CORRECT
3. Valtteri Bottas, Williams - Didn't race so I gave everybody in the PREDICTORS LEAGUE a chance to change their prediction if they had Bottas in it. I chose Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari so... - CORRECT

Fastest lap: Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari - WRONG. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap.

Surprise: Kimi Räikkönen will do much better than last year! - CORRECT but Ferrari messed up his race.

Daniel Ricciardo did well last year but was disqualified after the race because Red Bull had some problems of understanding the rule book apparently. Don't wanna get into that subject now.

Valtteri Bottas could have easily been on the podium last year but made a mistake and lost a lot of positions. He didn't have enough time to catch the top3. Bottas made the most overtaking maneuvers in that race though.

Kevin Magnussen, who is replacing Fernando Alonso this weekend, was on the podium in his first race at Melbourne but that has been his only podium of his career. I do not think we will see a McLaren up there this weekend. They need a lot more work to get the whole package to work for them.

Melbourne hopes new deal will bring Ricciardo home win

Australian Grand Prix organisers are optimistic that Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo will score a home win in Melbourne by the end of the decade, after the city signed a new contract to host the race through to 2020.

Melbourne will celebrate its 20th running of the Australian Grand Prix next season, and having renewed its deal for a further five years over the weekend, wants to witness two-time F1 winner Ricciardo add an Albert Park victory to his tally.

“Within this contract we hope to see Australia’s own Daniel Ricciardo win the Formula One Australian Grand Prix and become world champion,” said Victoria Premier Denis Napthine on announcing the extension.

As one of several global sporting events staged in Victoria, the Australian Grand Prix - in which Ricciardo finished second this year before his car was disqualified - brings up to $39 million of economic benefits to the state and generates in the region of 400 full-time equivalent jobs.

“In addition, the worldwide broadcast delivers invaluable promotion and coverage to Melbourne and Victoria,” added Victoria’s Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher. “These cornerstone events enhance our international reputation as the world’s most liveable city.”

Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One group CEO, said the signing of the new contract was well deserved, commenting: “I congratulate Melbourne for the excellent way in which it presents Formula One to the world.”

Red Bull lose Ricciardo disqualification appeal

Red Bull have lost their appeal against Daniel Ricciardo’s exclusion from last month’s Australian Grand Prix results. Ricciardo was disqualified from second place after his car was found to have exceeded the maximum permitted fuel flow rate.

Following Monday’s sitting in Paris in which it heard evidence from all parties, the International Court of Appeal decided to uphold the decision of the Melbourne stewards. Red Bull have accepted the Court's verdict, full details of which will be published by the FIA later this week.

Red Bull chose to rely on their own fuel calculations at Albert Park, after experiencing what they termed ‘inconsistencies’ with the FIA-approved flow meter, but insisted they could prove they never exceeded the 100kg per hour limit.

The FIA - Formula One racing’s governing body - countered that allowances had been made for any such ‘inconsistencies’ and that using alternative calculation methods without its express permission was in itself also a breach of the regulations.

Accepting the Court’s ruling, Red Bull said: “We are of course disappointed by the outcome and would not have appealed if we didn’t think we had a very strong case.

"We always believed we adhered to the technical regulations throughout the 2014 Australian Grand Prix. We are sorry for Daniel that he will not be awarded the 18 points from the event, which we think he deserved. We will continue to work very hard to amass as many points as possible for the team, Daniel and Sebastian (Vettel) throughout the season. 

“We will now move on from this and concentrate on this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.”

Decision of the International Court of Appeal

The Court, after having heard the parties and examined their submissions, decided to uphold the Decision N°56 of the Stewards by which they decided to exclude Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s car N°3 from the results of the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.

The International Court of Appeal was presided over by Mr Harry DUIJM (Netherlands), and included Mr Rui BOTICA SANTOS (Portugal), Mr Philippe NARMINO (Monaco), Mr Antonio RIGOZZI (Switzerland) and Mr Jan STOVICEK (Czech Republic).

Ricciardo upbeat despite Australia disqualification

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo says he has only positives to take away from the season-opening race in Australia, despite losing his maiden podium finish to disqualification.

Ricciardo was excluded from second place in Melbourne after stewards determined that his car had run with too high a fuel flow rate - a breach of Article 5.1.4 of the 2014 technical regulations, which limits teams to a maximum fuel flow rate of 100kg per hour.

The Australian said the stewards’ decision - which Red Bull are appealing - had "put a downer" on his home Grand Prix, but when asked if there were any pluses to take away from the race he was adamant there were.

“Actually it's mostly positives,” he told Red Bull’s website. “I did a good job in the car and I got to stand on the Australian Grand Prix podium – and no-one's taking the sensation of doing that away. 

“What happens next is outside of my ability to control but honestly, I'd rather it went down like this than have retired from the race with a mechanical problem. I'll take a podium and a subsequent disqualification over that any day of the week.”

With Red Bull suffering severe technical issues with the Renault-powered RB10 in pre-season testing, a podium finish in Australia seemed unlikely. Now, however, Ricciardo believes that with the team only beginning to unlock performance from their car, they have every chance of returning to the rostrum again soon. 

“Albert Park's made me hungry to get on the podium again - and I think we've got a really good chance of doing it,” he said. 

“The work we did in the winter targeted reliability rather than performance. It was only in Melbourne that we got the opportunity to start working on a set-up. The RB10 surprised us by being pretty competitive in the dry and very competitive in the wet. It's going to get much better as we dial it in over the next few races and catch up with those teams that did more miles pre-season.

“At the moment, we're in the battle to be the second-best team. Obviously that isn't where we want to be but it's exceeding our expectations of only a few weeks ago. I think once we really get into the setup of the car, we'll be able to close the gap to Mercedes. Obviously they're going to improve too but I think we're in a good position to make bigger strides.”

From Australia, Red Bull travel to Malaysia and a circuit on which they scored a dominant, if controversial, one-two finish in 2013. On that occasion Sebastian Vettel defied team orders instructing him to hold station and passed team mate Mark Webber for the win.

There has been a lot of negative feedback about the sound in the new F1 cars. Even Bernie Ecclestone himself has said that the sound is laughable.

2014 Australian Grand Prix review

Wow! what a race! Someone could say it was boring cause Rosberg dominated the race. If you look at the rest of the field it was actually very interesting if you ask me.

Right after the start Nico Rosberg overtook his teammate Lewis Hamilton like a flying bullet.
I said earlier in a post that these new regulations might fit Rosberg better than Hamilton. It's hard to say because Hamilton had more technical issues but anyways I believe this will be Rosberg's season and not Hamilton's. Nico's father Keke won the championship in 1982 and Nico knows that he's as good as his father was.

The next thing I wanted to mention was Kamui Kobayashi's crash in the first corner. He hit Massa and Kimi Räikkönen's tyre but Kimi managed to continue the race. He had some problems with his tyres but according to Pirelli it was because of the weather... funny explanation when nobody else had problems with them.

Massa was furious and said that Kobayashi's crash was just like Grosjean's move in Spa 2012. I guess he overreacted just a bit.

Caterham stated that the crash was not Kobayashi's fault because the car had faulty brakes.

The other Caterham broke down later and Marcus Ericsson was forced to retire his first race. Sad because he didn't drive that much in the practice sessions either. Caterham had a lot of problems and I believe that they have even more issues than they are telling us.

Hamilton and Vettel were forced to retire early in the race which was good in a way. I am sure that Vettel retiring was a positive thing to many fans. Hamilton being the favorite for the championship also retiring makes the series more interesting.

A big surprise was Daniel Ricciardo's pace in the race. Compared to Vettel he was just flying!
Red Bull was just awful in the winter testings so were did this speed come from?
In the end we know why though. Vettel's car was legal and he retired and Ricciardo's was not so he was disqualified. Who knows what will happen with them this year. I guess they might take podiums and maybe a win this year but nothing else. On the other hand I shouldn't underestimate Adrian Newey.

Lotus was a big disappointment. I knew they had problems but didn't realize that they would be fighting for positions with the Marussias and Caterhams. That was just laughable! Then they both retired. Maldonado said that moving to Lotus was the best decision he ever made but seeing how well his former teammate Valtteri Bottas was driving... I guess he doesn't think so anymore.

Valtteri Bottas was one of the biggest stars in the race! The guy just overtook car after car until he was behind Alonso. He was less than 1 second behind Alonso so he could have used DRS on him but didn't. You might wonder why and the truth is that Bottas had problems with his DRS. If everything would have worked like it was supposed to then I don't know how high he would have risen in the race.

Then there was his small unfortunate accident when he touched the wall. He dropped to last place and started everything all over again by overtaking car after car and showing everybody what he is made of.  No wonder Mika Häkkinen and Toto Wolff have both taken him under their wing and getting him where he is today. Phenomenal driver! He is going to be one of my biggest favorites this year.

Then I got two new favorites drivers for this season! Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat. These guys were already showing experienced drivers that they are rookies to be reckoned with. 

Magnussen was 2nd after Ricciardo was excluded from the race and Kvyat was 9th in a Toro Rosso. Is Toro Rosso getting better or did Kvyat make the car look better than it really was?

Kevin Magnussen made his father Jan proud by getting a better result in his first race than he got in his whole F1 career. Jan Magnussen was supposed to be a star but liked to smoke and drink a bit too much.

Nico Hülkenberg drove a great race again and gave Fernando Alonso a very hard time. It almost seemed that the Force India was better than Ferrari or if it wasn't I guess Hülkenberg just drove better than Alonso in Melbourne.

Alonso and Räikkönen were 5th and 6th at best in the race. After the pitstop (were they came in at the same time) Kimi was forced to drop a couple of places. That was a bit frustrating for him.

On track Kimi had brake and tyre issues and lost his position to Bottas two times. Let's hope that this season will be fair and not just technical problems. Räikkönen had a couple of good seasons with Lotus so it's a bit weird that suddenly it all comes collapsing down at Ferrari.

Alonso said that Räikkönen might be the fastest driver in F1 and that there are a few others that say the same. He believes that Räikkönen didn't really feel good in the car this weekend and that the problems were probably not because of him.

One more thing before I start comparing my guesses: POOR RICCIARDO! I REALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THE GUY. He seems to be a great guy and clearly the happiest Formula One driver ever.
He was giggling in the car when he got 2nd place and the team said that they can hear his smile through the radio. He must have been devastated when they disqualified him.

So now it's time for the guesses!

Pole position: Felipe Massa - It's hard to say at this point who is taking poles etc. but this time I was totally wrong. Lewis Hamilton took pole with his Mercedes.

The race:

1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes - Retired the race but could have easily taken 2nd place behind Rosberg.
2. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes - Rosberg was one position higher up.
3. Felipe Massa, Williams - Retired the race right in the beginning. Williams was very fast so it could have happened I'll give you that.

Fastest lap: Kimi Räikkönen - with those tyres and brakings no chance! Nico Rosberg was fastest and only Valtteri Bottas had chances to beat that lap time.

Surprise: Marussia! - Yes they were surprisingly bad! I thought that they would have done better but they started by having problems before the lights even went out at the start. In the tests they had shown some improvement though.
